One of the first things we decided when starting WALD Villas project was to make sustainable actions. Right from the beginning of the WALD Villas project, we have taken environmental aspects into account as comprehensively as possible.

We want to develop our operating methods to be more environmentally responsible, and we have build the EcoCompass environmental management system for our company.

An environmental tool of EcoCompass is for identifying our most relevant environmental impacts, creating environmental program with objectives and concrete measures, learning relevant environmental laws and regulations and engaging employees and partners in our environmental work.

We have been granted an EcoCompass Certificate in August 2024. In addition, we have fulfilled all the criteria set for the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label, and granted to use the STF label as a statement to our long term commitment to sustainable tourism.

Our sustainable actions so far:

  • Electricity

    WALD Villas uses an electricity supplier that delivers always 100% renewable energy.

    Every cabin has an air heat pump from a company that is an Eco-lighthouse certificated.

    Energy consumption is reduced by using energy-saving lights. 

  • Recycling & reuse

    WALD Villas has waste collectors in every cabin for paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic and mixed waste (+bio waste coming). Everything is sorted separately and recycled.  

    We have also many things reused, such as, dishes, tablecloths, bowls, vases, etc. 

  • Interiors

    Most of the furniture and utility items are bought from local entrepreneurs in the spirit of the "support local" philosophy. 

    The furniture has been chosen taking into account responsibility and environmental values. For example, the beds are manufactured in Finland and have been awarded the Key Flag Symbol. The electricity used in their the factory is always produced from renewable sources and only FSC-labelled wood is used in the products. 

  • Building

    WALD Villas cabins and saunas are built of log at the Salvos Factory, Pyhäntä. Timber is renewable and organic building material, and increasing the use of wood is an effective way to hold back the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.  

    The logs of the buildings come from the forests of Northern Finland. 

    The buildings are manufactured indoors at the factory, which produces its own heat from the wood chips and shavings generated during production. 

    Ready-to-move-in buildings are transported with a one-time delivery that reduces emissions caused by transportation compared to on-site construction. 

  • Biodiversity

    We have built deadwood fences that provide sheltered nesting spots for birds, small animals, and insects, while also serving as windbreaks and privacy screens. The fence decomposes slowly from the bottom, creating a local deadwood continuum. The fence was built of the trees cleared from the WALD Villas' properties.
